Empowering Homeowners: Unveiling the Delhi Solar Policy 2024 and PM – Surya Ghar Muft Bijli Yojana

[email protected] | 30th January 2024

Introduction

Delhi has always been at the forefront of adopting innovative measures for a sustainable future, and the latest announcement by Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal on the Delhi Solar Policy 2024 is a testament to this commitment. Aimed at revolutionizing the way Delhi homeowners consume electricity, this policy is set to make solar energy not just an option but a norm for households across the national capital.

Zero-Cost Bills and Lucrative Incentives

The Delhi government has introduced an ambitious policy that aims to transform the urban landscape into a greener and more energy-efficient one. The Delhi Rooftop Solar Policy 2024 is designed to encourage homeowners and businesses alike to invest in solar energy by providing substantial financial benefits and making the transition smoother and more affordable.

Unprecedented Subsidies and Incentives: New Subsidy Offering

Under the new policy, Delhi residents can avail themselves of an enticing subsidy of Rs 2,000 per kW, with a maximum benefit of up to Rs 10,000. This subsidy is in addition to the central subsidy of up to Rs 1.17 lakhs, significantly reducing the initial investment required for solar panel installation.

Solar Generation Based Incentive

The policy doesn't stop at installation subsidies. It further rewards solar energy generation with a Solar Generation Based Incentive, offering:

  • Rs 3 per unit for energy generation up to 3 kW
  • Rs 2 per unit for energy generation from 3 kW to 10 kWp

  • Delhi Subsidy has a cap of Rs 10,000 per system.
  • Rs 1/Unit GBI for commercial and Indrutrial consumer is only for the first 200MW

These incentives ensure that the benefits of installing solar panels extend well beyond the initial investment, providing ongoing financial returns to the users.

Important factors of Delhi 2024 Solar Policy

For every unit of solar energy generated, consumers will get Rs 3/unit (upto 3kW) and Rs 2/unit (for 3 to 10kW ).

  • The amount calculated for GBI shall be adjusted in the monthly electricity bill of the consumer
  • And any excess amount shall be directly deposited into consumer's bank account every month by the respective DISCOM

For the first time, Solar GBI (Generation Based Incentive) has been introduced for commercial and industrial connections. Now commercial and industrial consumers can avail of Rs 1/unit of GBI. However, this is on a first-come-first-serve basis for the first 200MW of installations in Delhi.

The year 2024 brings more joy for the homeowners when they install a solar system on the roofs or terraces of their homes.

The solar subsidy cashback under MNRE (Central Subsidy Scheme) has been increased to:

  • Rs 18,000 per kWp for residential solar rooftop systems between 1-3 kWp capacity (from the previous Rs 14,588/kWp)
  • Rs 9,000 per kWp for residential solar rooftop systems between 4-10 kWp capacity (from the previous Rs 7,294/kWp)
  • The maximum solar subsidy is increased to Rs 1,17,000 for a 10kWp or higher solar system capacity (from the previous Rs 94,822)

The below table specifies the rates for different system sizes:

1 kWp:  14,588 18,000

2 kWp:  29,176 36,000

3 kWp:  43,764 54,000

4 kWp:  51,058 63,000

5 kWp:  58,352 72,000

6 kWp:  65,646 81,000

7 kWp:  72,940 90,000

8 kWp:  80,934 99,000

9 kWp:  87,528 1,08,000

10 kWp: 94,822 1,17,000

You can find the complete details about central subsidy here.

The new subsidy rates (benchmark CFA rates) will be applicable for all claims submitted on the online National Portal for Rooftop Solar.

The new rates have been announced by the Ministry of New and Renewable Energy (MNRE) under the Rooftop Solar Scheme (Phase – II) and residential customers under different categories. As per the MNRE guidelines, the new rates shall be applicable for applications received on the National Portal for Rooftop Solar or for solar systems installed through the tender mode.

For special category states, the central solar subsidy for residential consumers for rooftop solar systems between 1-3kWp shall be Rs 20,000/kW and for systems between 4-10kW, the new subsidy shall be Rs 10,000/kW.

Following are the special states:

  • Uttarakhand & Himachal Pradesh
  • Assam and All North East States
  • Ladakh, Jammu and Kashmir
  • Lakshadeep, and Andaman & Nicobar

For RWAs/ Group Housing Societies, for common facilities upto 500kW, but with a ceiling of 10kWp per household, now the revised solar subsidy rate shall be Rs 9,000/kWp for general states and Rs 10,000/kWp for special states.

The respective DISCOMs shall continue to be the implementing agencies. The residential consumers can choose only the empaneled vendors for their solar systems to avail of this subsidy benefit.

It is important to note that any state-level solar subsidy e.g. upto Rs 30,000 in Uttar Pradesh shall be over and above the central subsidy. This means that a residential consumer in Uttar Pradesh can now get a maximum solar subsidy of Rs 1,47,000 for a 10kW or higher capacity solar system.

So if you are living in Delhi, Gurgaon, Faridabad, Panipat, or any part of Haryana, then the maximum solar subsidy can be Rs 1.17 Lacs. However, if you reside in Noida, Greater Noida, Ghaziabad, Lucknow, Kanpur, Meerut, or any part of Uttar Pradesh, then you can get a maximum solar subsidy of Rs 1.47 Lacs.

At MYSUN, we are committed to provide the most seamless and satisfying solar experience to homeowners and we highly recommend homeowners to avail of this great opportunity to go solar in 2024.

*Please note that the central subsidy and Uttar Pradesh additional solar subsidy rates mentioned above are applicable as of date and these may change from time to time.
