In May 1927, Charles Lindbergh flew solo, non-stop from New York to Paris in his plane named "Spirit of St. Louis." He made history through the heroic exploit and gave a major boost to aviation. In March 2015, another heroic exploit took place, spawning a new era in transportation industry using clean and renewable energy. Two Swiss pilots—Bertrand
Piccard and Andre Borschberg—set out in a maiden attempt to circumnavigate the globe in their solar plane named
Solar Impulse 2.
They began their journey from Abu Dhabi and landed in Ahmedabad via Oman. There were many countries en route but the most arduous was crossing the Pacific. After many successful flights between various destinations, the mission had to be kept on hold because of damage to the batteries, repairing which proved to be time consuming. However, before setting a new timetable, they had proved that human spirit is indomitable and that solar energy is a viable alternative of clean energy.
One never knows the spin-offs of such initiatives. It is possible that in future, such unmanned planes become substitutes for expensive satellites for providing useful data in remote locations or for surveillance. And who knows, one day, you and I could be flying on such planes across cities and countries, the way we do in the fossil fuel-powered planes today. They began their journey from Abu Dhabi and landed in Ahmedabad via Oman. There were many countries en route but the most arduous was crossing the Pacific. After many successful flights.
