Lakshadweep Solar Policy and it's Solar Highlights

Lakshadweep is a Union Territory formed by a group of islands in the Laccadive Sea off the southern-western coast of India. It forms the smallest Union Territory in India with total surface area of just 32 km square. With a population of just under 70,000 according to the survey of 2011, it is no surprise that the state has only .75MW of commissioned solar power, with none added last year. However, just like every UT, Lakshadweep is also a part of the 24x7 power for all initiative lead by the Government of India and Administration of UT of Lakshadweep. While there are on record, no unelectrified houses in Lakshadweep, it is estimated that the per capita annual consumption of 657 units will rise to about 962 in FY 19, opening the opportunity for the likes of solar. 8 islands in Lakshadweep including Bitra, Bangaram, Agatti, Kavaratti have solar plants in the range of 25-100kWp. A proposal to dd an additional 50kWp floating solar plant in Bitra is on the table and being considered, which would then make Bitra a 100% green island. The plan is to add at least 1 MW solar power by FY 2019 and achieve 10MW of solar power by the year 2022 as a part of the National Solar Mission.
